If you want to have a minimal amount of personal data being gathered, use paid services. But to "hide" yourself in name of personal privacy? Haha. This is useful for companies where employees can access internal systems securely while being remotely. To access it, you need to authenticate yourself. The main purpose of VPN is for adding a layer of confidentially and integrity of data going through it. Especially the free ones are easy to dismantle. That's just another level of paranoia and that using a VPN protects your identity is a myth. Yet I hope that you are not using a free VPN service or keep using that site for that mobile number confirmation thingie. The bill is being paid with your personal data. There is a reason why they offer a free service. I know that they can read the content of my mails. I use google's mail as one of my mailboxes.
